Short History of the Wisconsin River

The Wisconsin River runs through the state of Wisconsin from the Dam on Lac Vieux Desert Lake in the north, down to where it meets the Mississippi River near Prairie du Chein. There are many Wisconsin cities and villages along the river, including Wisconsin Dells. Where the river runs through Wisconsin Dells, you’ll find a scenic gorge made up of beautiful sandstone cliffs towering both sides of the river. This region of the Wisconsin River was originally used for lumbering back in the 1850’s. In 1908, the Kilburn Dam was installed, separating the lower Wisconsin River with the Upper Wisconsin River. Today, there are numerous tours, recreational activities, and boat rides offered on and along both parts of the river.

The next time you’re visiting Wisconsin Dells, check out a WildThing Jet Boat Tour or a Dells Army Duck Tour along the Wisconsin River. These tours provide family fun for all ages.
